Easy Way to Spruce up a Spring Wreath for Fall
Sprucing up an inexpensive Spring wreath for Fall is not only super easy but will save you money in the long run. I was shopping for wreaths and could not believe the prices. I wanted a Fall wreath that would go great in my office/guest room and was having the hardest time finding one at a reasonable price and with what I was looking for.

Sprucing Up a Wreath
Thats when I took matters into my own hands! I remembered I had an inexpensive Spring wreath that always looked very cheap. I believe I paid less then $20 for it. The wreath came on a plastic base and everything about it was far from looking realistic. Since I had no plans of ever using the wreath the way it was, I decided to spruce it up for Fall.
What You Will Need For This DIY
- Inexpensive wreath of your choice (check thrift stores)
- Hot glue gun and glue sticks
- Wire cutters
- A few floral sprays
- Four mini pumpkins
- Floral wire
- Burlap ribbon (if you want to hang similar to mine)
Layering In Realistic Florals pieces
This spring wreath had so many bare spots. I could not wait to get started. I had my heart set on finding some blue and white flowers. I wanted to compliment the blue shiplap accent wall in the room with not over doing it. I came across bunches of Blue Billy buttons and what I think was a version of German Statice. They were perfect and I fell in love with the different textures they would bring to the wreath.
The first step was separating each branch to the white flowers using wire cutters.
When layering in florals to a wreath, you want to start with your neutrals. Then work in your “pops”, which is the featured color that you wish to stand out. I bought two sprays of the white flowers, but I only ended up needing one.
Next, was attaching the white flowers to my Spring wreath. If you are dealing with a grapevine type of wreath base, you can wire them in if you like. Since I was dealing with a plastic base, I decided to hot glue each of my flowers onto the wreath.
Just by adding in the white more realistic flowers, my wreath started to look a whole lot better. I hate to let anything go to waste if I can help it, so I also added in the leaves from the flower sprays sporadically into my wreath. This really helped fill in all the bare spots and gave it a more natural look.
Then it was time to work in my blue flowers, “my pop”. I used wire cutters to cut each blue flower and worked them into my wreath in the same fashion as the white flowers. I added in the leaves again to give the wreath a nice full appearance.
Lastly, was adding on the the mini pumpkins of course! I had some small white and speckled light green pumpkins that worked so lovely with the wreaths new Fall look. I inserted a bendable wire into the bottom of the styrofoam pumpkin and attached them on.
I decided to wire the pumpkins on, so that I could take them off and use the wreath for Christmas too. You can see in the picture below how I wrapped the pumpkins wire around the base of the wreath to hold it in place.
Is That the Same Wreath?
I love the results! I am so happy I took the time to spruce it up. Its nice and full and looks more realistic now too! Looks a lot like those $50 wreaths I was eyeing at the store.
A New Wreath for Seasons to Come
I wanted to hang my wreath in the center of my vintage mirror on the room’s accent wall. I thought it would look pretty hanging down to the center of the mirror on some ribbon. I used a cream burlap ribbon and added a 3M hook to get the job done.

Oh, I am all about the wreaths! I have made so many over the last few years! And, I do lots of what you do…buy a bush and cut it apart, gluing here and there to create what I like! When we get our attic stairs put in, my husband is going to hang a special “wreath-line” so I can hang them all up and always have them available!
I really love how your wreath turned out…love those pops of color! And, adding the wire to the bottoms of the pumpkins…that was a genius move! I’m going to remember that one!!
