How to Make Vintage Bottle Christmas Ornaments

It is Time to Decorate your Tree with an Easy DIY Vintage Christmas Ornament.

Nothing gets me more excited about the holiday season than decorating your own Christmas tree. The thrill of pulling out all your special ornaments and reminiscing on the memories that they hold. Some can make us laugh, cry or bring us back to a special place in time. It is amazing the power a Christmas ornament can have over us.

So it goes without saying, how very special Christmas ornaments can be. I love giving Christmas Ornaments every year as gifts to my friends and family. This year I will be giving vintage bottles to them to hang on their tree. It is a simple ornament to make and I can promise you that it will not take up much of your time during this busy holiday season.

I also teamed up with my friend Rachel from the The Antiqued Journey, for this post. We decided to collaborate and make ornaments together. Now, you leave with more than one ornament idea today too! Super great right?

  • Small glass bottles
  • Craft wire
  • Skeleton key charms / Jewelry charms of your choice
  • Mini holly leaves
  • Red and white jute twine
  • Mini styrofoam Christmas craft balls
  • Hot glue gun/ glue sticks
  • Scissors

Vintage Bottles

To start your vintage bottle Christmas Ornament, you are going to need to find some glass bottles to work with. I found some mini glass bottles with craft wire ready to hang at Hobby Lobby for $2 a piece. If you have authentic vintage medicine bottles to use even better. You can make any small bottle of your choice ready to hang with some craft wire.

Choosing Your Glitz

The best part of making these ornaments, is going to be picking out your Christmas glitz to go in and on your bottles. I thought it would be neat if I hung some vintage looking skeleton keys and charms on my bottles. I found some great necklace charms down the jewelry making aisle that were the perfect size for my bottles.

For the inside of my bottles, I had a bag of mini red and gold styrofoam balls, assorted in size.

Adding On Charms with Jute

At first I was going to hang the charms with some Christmas ribbon, but then I came across some red and white jute twine that I personally like more than ribbon. I cut a decent size of Jute and wrapped it a few times around the top of the bottle. I went around 3 times for mine, but depending on the size or shape of your bottle 4 or 5 times might be good too. You will want to end with two even strings of jute twine hanging on either side slightly longer than your bottle.

Next you are going to add your vintage charms! This is where your personal touch will shine through. This is what will make your Christmas ornament so very special and different from anyone else’s. The vintage charms you pick will determine the vintage Christmas look you are trying to achieve.

I added all my charms to only one side of my jute twine strings and then twisted the other string around, making a small knot on the back side of the bottle.

Then I pulled tightly and snipped the excess strings on the back of the bottle.

Next with a hot glue gun, I simply glued down the small strings near the knot, to make it very neat in the back.

Now, all you have to do is fill up your vintage bottle ornaments with the styrofoam balls to complete the look.

For Christmas Decorating, Party Favors, or Gift giving!

Whatever you choose to do with your vintage ornaments, I am positive it will bring joy to yourself and others. Anything homemade carries a special touch to it that cannot be found in something you can buy off a shelf. These vintage bottle ornaments are very easy to make and also very affordable which is important around this time of the year.
