I took over hosting Thanksgiving about 5 years ago from my parents. I felt honored and excited about cooking all the food and coming up with a theme for my dinning table. For anyone who loves decorating as much as I do, its like a dream come true. The best part is that my husband and I enjoy cooking together and it makes entertaining so much fun instead of being a chore. We have learned a few tricks since then and that even applies when it comes to decorating my dinning table. For those of you that love a good DIY project, here is a table riser and pair of candle sticks you can do in one day and have on your Thanksgiving table by the very next morning.

DIY Table Riser

I constantly try to repurpose and re-use materials for my DIY projects. This goes for my supplies too. I like to try and get a few DIY projects out of a can of paint for example. So when it came to making my table riser and candle sticks, I did not have to spend much. Even if you need some extra supplies for this project, making your own decor will always save you some money. To create the riser, I used a 10″x 2″ board that measured 25″ long, it was left over from a previous project. At first I thought it was going to be to too long for what I wanted to do, but once I started adding pumpkins on top of it (before it was even a riser), I realized it was the perfect size for my table. I would not go any smaller than 6 inches wide if you want to do a slimmer riser. After you have the size of your riser established, it is time to begin.

The first thing I did was wipe the piece of wood down with a damp cloth and sand any rough areas along the sides. I grabbed the antiquing wax I have and used it to stain the top. Wood stain would work just as well. I already had the wax on hand and really like the color it leaves on natural wood. Next I painted two coats in a light sage green to the sides. I had more wood dowels leftover from when I did legs for the thrift store cutting board riser. Therefore I used the same ones and painted them in the sage green too. Once all the paint had dried, I attached the legs on using Gorilla wood glue. The glue dries fairly fast and my riser was completed after only a couple of hours.

Candle Stick Holders

I enjoy having candles of any kind on my holiday tables. It always creates a beautiful ambiance and a warm cozy feeling, which is exactly how I wanted my guests to feel. When I envisioned my Thanksgiving table, I thought white candle sticks on my riser would look amazing with the color theme I chose. I shopped around a bit for a pair, but couldn’t find anything with a reasonable price tag. So to save some money I bought two natural wood candle stick holders from my local craft store that were ready to be painted. It was perfect, I love to paint and I have tons of paint on hand at home.

I painted the natural wood candle stick holders with white chalk paint. Any paint will work honestly. White chalk paint was what I owned and it dries extremely fast which is one of the reasons I use it often. I only did one coat and was not worried for full coverage since I had plans to distress them anyways. I find the easiest way to do a quick distressed look is to dip paper towel into paint and rubbed it on the candle stick randomly until you achieve the look you want.

Adding Pumpkins

As soon as I finished the candle sticks, I was ready to put my Thanksgiving table together. I laid down a white table cloth with a faded striped table runner that would compliment the neutral colors of my pumpkins. Next came my DIY table riser, followed by my painted candle stick holders. When doing any kind of tablescaping, it is best to always start with your larger decor and work in the smaller pieces after. I then added some fall florals, succulents and my favorite rattan pumpkins for some texture. I found the large and small rattan pumpkins at Hobby Lobby and love the natural look they have. Once my larger decor was placed, I filled in with assorted pumpkins in different hues of sage green, white and light orange. The very last touch was adding a harvest and thankful sign. I can not wait to be seated with family around my Thanksgiving table enjoying each others company, with great food and my fall decor.
